Mercane WideWheel Pro — Your Quick Guide

Are you looking for a reliable and versatile electric scooter to take you around town? Look no further than the Mercane WideWheel Pro. This electric scooter is the perfect companion for commuters and casual riders alike, with its powerful motor, long-range battery life, and comfortable ride.

In this review, we’ll take a closer look at the features and benefits of the Mercane WideWheel Pro and see why it’s one of the best electric scooters on the market.

Acceleration

Mercane WideWheel Pro’s acceleration is where the fun begins with its dual hub motors and 1,000kw peak power. The Pro reaches its top speed in a fraction of the time compared to other electric scooters, averaging 8.5 seconds in performance tests, making it a thrill to ride.

For less experienced riders, the power and top speed may take some getting used to, but you can rest assured that the bike’s stability and security can be felt throughout. Maintaining speed is effortless, and riding it is always a pleasure.

This makes the Pro an excellent option for customers seeking enough speed to provide an exhilarating experience, but who would prefer not to drive with white-knuckled caution to work.

Range

The Pro’s maximum range of 30 miles is respectable, but it’s not one of its strongest features, especially when you consider that you’ll see closer to 20 miles in real-world conditions. For this reason, you may decide to spend a bit more on the EMOVE Cruiser, which has a maximum range of 62 miles.

Nonetheless, it is not all gloom and doom. The Pro’s range is 10 to 15% greater than that of its predecessor. If you believe the WideWheel could be the right scooter for you, you can extend the range by riding in Eco mode.

Hill Climb Test

If the Pro’s impressive top speed, acceleration performance, and dual motors hadn’t already tipped you off, its performance on hills is remarkable. The Pro is exceptionally maneuverable compared to other e-scooters, without sacrificing significant speed or stability.

You can reach your destination without putting undue strain on yourself or the scooter because the acceleration is consistent at speeds close to the top speed (average of 21 mph or 33 km/h in performance tests) and full power when climbing.

Brakes

The WideWheel Pro, with its 120 mm mechanical disc brakes and dual electronic front and rear brakes, is a prime illustration of the push for increased scooter safety. The average braking distance from top speed is only 12 feet (3.5 meters) with the brakes performing exceptionally well.

pro

This is a significant improvement over the original Mercane WideWheel, which had only one disc brake and a slower reaction time. The placement of the WideWheel Pro’s brake cables outside of the stem is a questionable design choice that makes them susceptible to snagging if you’re not careful.

The performance of the brakes is unaffected, and although this is a minor concern, it feels like an oversight.

Suspension

The combination of foam-filled tires and a dual spring suspension system creates a riding experience comparable to floating on Aladdin’s magic carpet. Notably, the suspension on this scooter is not as bouncy as that of a high-end scooter or its competitor, the EMOVE Cruiser, but it does the job and is more than suitable for urban rides along pavements and roads.

Charging Time

The larger battery is one of the most significant upgrades between this model and the previous one. The 48V 15Ah high-efficiency Li-ion battery provides more power than the 48V 13.2Ah battery. The battery capacity of this bad boy is double that of a typical low-cost scooter.

The charging port is located on the right side of the front wheel, with a maximum charge time of 10 hours to prevent the battery from overheating. The red-to-green charging light indicator makes charging simple.

Portability

The weight of the Pro is 24 kilograms. Although it is light enough to transport over short distances or up a flight of stairs, this scooter is not ultra-portable. The scooter has a collapsible stem and collapsible handlebars, allowing it to be folded down to 109 by 23 by 41 centimeters. When folded, it fits easily into the trunk of a small car.

Comparatively, it is identical in length and height to a typical small scooter, such as the Xiaomi Mi M365, but actually slimmer (107 centimeters by 43 centimeters by 48 centimeters). When unfolded, the folding stem’s unique threaded locking mechanism makes it extremely stable.

If you are strong enough to lift 24 kilograms, you can lock the stem in the folded position for easier one-handed carrying. This type of folding mechanism is slower than other types and requires more than a few seconds to disassemble. The WideWheel’s compact folded size makes it quite convenient for storage at your destination or concealment on public transportation.

A spring-loaded collar mechanism that is very quick to activate folds the handlebars. Locked in place, the handlebars are relatively sturdy but have a small amount of play.

Handlebars

As the hub of your scooter’s operation, the Pro’s intelligent display is located on its handlebars. Here you can choose your riding mode between Eco (for maximum fuel economy) and Sport (for maximum torque). With the rear brake lever on the left and the front brake lever on the right, as well as a conveniently located and easy-to-use thumb throttle, the cockpit is optimally designed for novice riders to hop on the scooter and take off.

The hand grips are covered in grippy rubber, which, despite appearing to be a minor detail, is a crucial aspect of the scooter’s design, along with the 21.6-inch wide, yet foldable, handlebars. This combination enables you to exert firm control over both the steering column and the incredibly wide tires.

Frame

Mercane, the manufacturer of the scooter, has considered feedback from the original WideWheel, where riders complained of the stem gradually loosening (causing stem wobble) after extended use. This is no longer an issue, as the reinforced, thicker stem has resolved the problem.

From the charcoal gray frame to the wide mudguards, uniquely shaped deck, and red accents, the WideWheel Pro embodies the aesthetics of a Lamborghini-designed electric scooter.

Cockpit

The cockpit of the 2020 Pro version of the WideWheel has been modernized. It has several significant new features, such as an LCD display, upgraded grips, and an extra brake lever. The backlit LCD displays both bars and volts for speed, mode, odometer, and battery status.

The display housing also contains a power button and mode button for rapidly switching between Eco (battery-saving, low performance) and Sport (high performance) modes. The body of the throttle controller is made of lightweight plastic and has a cheap feel. It lacks the robustness and smoothness of other quality throttles.

cockpit 2

Similar to the base model, throttle modulation is quite poor, making it difficult to precisely control the speed of the scooter. The updated grips are now two-toned and have a more ergonomic design than their predecessor.

Lights

The scooter has a front LED light mounted high and a red LED tail light mounted in the rear. Although the front light is relatively bright at close range, its lack of optics causes the light to disperse rapidly as the distance increases. When traveling at high speeds on a dark road, it is difficult to see sufficiently ahead to avoid serious road hazards.

Because of this, you can install an additional, extremely-bright light with superior optics to enhance your ability to see the road ahead.

The Wheels

The Pro is one of the few scooters available with 8 x 3.9-inch ultra-wide airless tires. They are filled with polyurethane foam, which provides a greater level of shock absorption than traditional rubber tires, in order to provide a soft and comfortable ride. Although they do not provide quite the same level of damping as pneumatics, the Pro’s front and rear suspension makes this a non-issue.

Compared to riding a scooter, you feel more like you’re floating on Aladdin’s magic carpet. While the tires’ chunkiness promotes balance and stability, their larger-than-average profile requires a learning curve and prevents sharp turns.

Build Quality

The construction quality of the WideWheel Pro is superior to that of previous models of the scooter. Important aluminum-alloy components have been fortified. The stem, neck, and fork of the 2020 Pro are also thicker for increased strength.  Despite the increased durability, the Pro has a maximum rider weight limit of 100 kilograms, which is a bit light for a 24 kilogram scooter.

The WideWheel Pro from Mercane has an IP rating of IP54. In practical terms, this means the scooter can be ridden in light rain, but it should never be submerged or soaked.

The Quality of the Ride

The secret to the Pro’s excellent ride quality lies in the combination of its extra-wide tires and dual spring suspension. It rides smoothly and securely due to its sturdy, reinforced frame, but, as mentioned previously, the wide tires take some getting used to. However, once you do, the ride quality is outstanding.

It is also important to note that the scooter’s wider wheels make it less agile than those with smaller wheels, meaning that sharp turns cannot be executed with the same finesse. The Pro provides a riding experience comparable to that of floating on Aladdin’s magic carpet when traversing urban terrain.

If you venture beyond the confines of urban exploration and into the world of off-road riding, the ride quality is not as smooth. The absence of air in the tires has a discernible effect on the ride quality. There is no alternative to air-filled pneumatic tires when it comes to providing additional suspension support, so you may experience a bumpy ride on rough terrain. For optimal performance, stay on the flats.
